What do you need to be able to find hidden treasure?
A treasure map!
But what happens if you are unable to understand it? If you don’t understand the language used on the map would it still be useful to you? And if you don’t know which island or mountain the treasure is hidden on, you would probably end up on the completely wrong island or mountain. You can get very lost looking for treasure if you do not have a clear and precise understanding of the map.
God has given us his map, the Bible. But so often we forget that we also have to understand it correctly in order to get where we are hoping to go, or find the things we are hoping to find.
Matthew 13 talks about treasure hidden in a field, and a merchant looking for fine pearls, these parables describe the secrets of the kingdom of heaven. They are secrets because they are hidden – just like treasure. Luckily God has given us the map, his word, but it is our responsibility to seek true understanding. If we do not have the understanding God intends, if God’s word has not been clearly explained to us, we are going to get lost looking for God’s kingdom and trying to understand the parables – creating our own (man-made) understanding along the way. After all, we are told that “small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Mt 7:14).
Let’s hunt for the treasure of true understanding, so that we can follow the narrow road that leads to life, and not get lost along the way!
